Activision Blizzard has announced a new tool that will be used by game developers as the company’s future game releases continue.
The Diversity Space Tool ranks characters across the network based on diversity. It has already been used in two of Activision Blizzard’s most popular house games, Note and watch And Call of duty.
The Diversity Space Tool is a measuring device that will guide developers to help them determine if their character traits and utterances are diverse enough to represent inclusivity. This Activision Blizzard tool will measure features such as physical appearance, ethnicity, cognitive ability, and many other attributes.
This diversity tool was created by King and MIT Game Labs to create and follow the rules for how characters are thought and made.
However, due to the nature of the new tool, it receives mixed reactions from its audience. Some have even become uncomfortable with the strangeness of creating a tool to measure diversity rather than talking to actual humans
Activision Blizzard Space Diversity Tool
Activision Blizzard employees have long demanded the company be more inclusive. Company employees have also taken legal steps regarding the difference in inclusion they feel within the system.
This is the first public step Activision Blizzard has taken since the company’s board of directors pledged in December 2021 to be more transparent about how it addresses diversity issues in their video games.
According to GameSpot, women make up only 24% of Activision’s workforce, while 36% of the company’s US-based employees identify as belonging to an underrepresented racial minority.
In the press release, the diversity numbers were deemed unsatisfactory, and the company agreed to promote diversity not only in its employees but also in all of its video game worlds. The new ranking system, a tool for Diversity Space, was developed specifically for this purpose.
Activision’s director of editorial content, Eric Alt, used Activision Blizzard’s official blog site to write an explanation of the feature on May 12. In the statement, the organization confirmed that it worked with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop a program that addresses unconscious bias.
As Dexterto, Jacqueline Chomatas, Director of the King Globalization Project, stated, “The Diversity Area Tool is a measurement tool to help determine how diverse a set of personality traits is and, therefore, how diverse this personality and actors are when compared to a ‘standard’.”

Mixed Reactions to Diversity Tool

According to Activision Blizzard, teams working on video games have already begun beta testing the new tool. The tool was used by the teams responsible for developing the new Call of Duty: Vanguard team.
Additionally, the gadget was set in its stride by the Overwatch 2 team at Blizzard, who reportedly had early impressions of the gadget that was on par with those of the Call of Duty team.
However, some criticized the new tool. As reported by 2KUTV, Imran Khan, Fanbyte News Editor, stated that Activision’s diversity tool is somewhat uncomfortable and miserable.
Khan did not back down from his thoughts on the feature in a Twitter post. He finds it absurd to have a need to develop a tool to define diversity rather than hiring designers from a variety of ethnicities.
Khan stated, “Like, that’s not bad — there’s no obvious malice in this. But you have to realize that creating a tool when you can just hire and listen to diverse designers is a bit of a madness.”
