It’s been a long and grueling season for the world champions. Everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong. The Blues were top of the Premier League until round 14 but that’s when things started heading south. Ben Chilwell was injured and several players sat out of the game due to injuries and COVID-19. A poor patch of play in games in December saw them drop to third and Romelu Lukaku exited with an explosive interview in which he criticized Thomas Tuchel’s tactics. The North London side went on to win the CWC title and reach the League Cup final but lost that to Liverpool on penalties.

The month of February then led to a change of ownership due to the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War which saw the imposition of sanctions on the owner Roman Abramovich. Roman was forced to join Chelsea in the market with American businessman Todd Boehle appointed to take over the club. With sanctions imposed by the UK government, Chelsea were not allowed to sell or sign any players which resulted in the departure of Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid and Andreas Christensen to FC Barcelona with Cesar Azpilicueta set to join Christensen at the Nou Camp. The contracts of key players such as Jorginho and N’Golo Kante have been terminated in 2023 as well, so we are looking forward to a complete renewal of the defence.

On the other hand, Watford once again suffered a disastrous season in the Premier League. The team fully equipped to handle the EFL Championship didn’t seem ready to take on the competitive edge of the Premier League. Emmanuel Denis, who only signed in the summer, has scored 10 goals this season, with Joshua King, Ismael Sarr and Cucho Hernandez all scoring 5 goals, and they are clearly not good enough to stay in this division. The Pozzo family’s lack of long-term vision and ruthlessness in dismissal managers has once again contributed to a lack of cohesion in building a squad that could fight in the Premier League.

Xisco was sent off despite the club sitting in 12th place and veteran Claudio Ranieri brought in as his replacement and the squad’s form deteriorated under his tutelage. Roy Hodgson had convinced the club to come out of retirement to help the club stay in the division but it was too late.

With the closure of the UCL qualifier, several reports emerged as it was indicated that Harvey Vale, Charlie Webster, Mason Burstow, Bashir Humphreys, Lewis Hall, Xavier Simons, Jude Soonsup-Bell, Dylan Williams and Joe Haigh are all set to perform on the team the match.

Ben Chilwell has started training with the first team again but will have to wait until next season to play in a competitive league match. Callum Hudson Odoi has also started training but is unlikely to start in this game. Kepa is likely to be sold or loaned this summer, so he may start before Edouard Mendy. Mateo Kovacic was injured in the FA Cup final and played no part in the 1-1 draw with Leicester City while Timo Werner continues his time on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury.

In his last game as Hornets coach, Roy Hodgson didn’t have a lot of options to choose from after Ismail Sarr, Emmanuel Dennis, Juraj Koca, Peter Etebo, Chuck Fordy and Imran Loza all exited this match. Goalkeeper Ben Foster will likely start the match after revealing that this will be Watford’s last.

Samir is likely to be off the bench for this match after withdrawing from the Leicester match due to a thigh injury. Tom Cleverly has also recovered from a rib injury, while Kiko Femenya and Joshua King are available after both suffered from recent illness.
