Elon Musk “is not against” unions if workers are interested”

US Labor Secretary Marty Walsh said during a recent conversation with Tesla Team boss Elon Musk, the CEO reiterated that he was not opposed to consolidating the electric car maker’s workforce if employees showed interest.

“We had a good conversation,” Walsh said in an interview. Hey ho! Finance Live. We talked about economics and industrialization. We talked about a bunch of things. You raised the question about unions. He certainly said he was not against it. He said that if the workers were interested, he would love to have the conversations.”

Musk recently tweeted that he was not opposed to the United Auto Workers (UAW) coming to Tesla’s Fremont plant in Northern California for a vote. “I hereby call on the UAW to hold a union vote at their convenience. Tesla will do nothing to stop them,” Musk said.

Walsh’s comments mainly mirror those of Musk’s tweet, which was posted on March 3. Musk emphasized for some time that Tesla treated its employees well. Good enough that none of them support unions in the factory. “The real challenge we’re facing is that the Bay Area has negative unemployment, so if we don’t treat and compensate the (cool) people well, they’ll get many more offers and they’ll leave!” Musk male.

After criticizing unions for several years, Musk recently commented on the case of a $2.2 million embezzlement scheme by a former UAW treasurer in Detroit. Musk said earlier this week that the UAW’s motto is “Fight for the right to embezzle money from auto workers! The UAW stole millions from workers, while Tesla made many workers millionaires (through stock grants). Musk commented:” There is a subtle but important difference.”

The former secretary of the Treasury of UAW Local 412 in Detroit pleaded guilty to embezzlement of union funds and money laundering. Timothy Edmonds, a former treasurer, “systematically drained” domestic bank accounts, which amounted to about $2.2 million, according to a report from Reuters He said.

Walsh visited the new Gigafactory Texas plant in Tesla earlier this month. “It’s a great facility there, 10 million square feet in size. It’s a challenge even though he originally built it on a landfill,” Walsh said. We talked about it. We talked about the culture of the way he thinks about a company. We talked about a lot of different issues.”

The Walsh and Musk meeting was among the Biden administration’s first admissions to Tesla. Musk and Tesla enthusiasts have regularly called on Biden and other political figures to disregard the company’s contributions to the global electric car market. Biden finally acknowledged Tesla during a press conference in February.
