Joaquin Phoenix and partner Rooney Mara will produce the documentary The End of Medicine.

Cinema – Joaquin Phoenix’s commitment to the animal cause is unwavering. In collaboration with director Keegan Kohn and BAFTA-winning Alex Lockwood, Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara will produce The End of Medicine. This is a long documentary about zoonoses, that is, diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa, which threaten the health and life of all human beings.

Production of the documentary began in October 2019, a few months before the COVID-19 crisis. It includes interviews with some of the world’s leading scholars whose research and testimonies have concluded that the public health emergency we now face was inevitable and far from over.

To “Change Our Consumer Habits”

“Collectively, we are increasingly aware of the threat posed by zoonotic diseases, but our governments and mainstream media are focusing more on control rather than prevention,” said Alex Lockwood, director of the documentary The End of Medicine. With this film, we hope to shed light on how animal agriculture and environmental destruction contribute to these new threats. We also hope to show that issues of racial injustice and disease are often intrinsically linked,” he says.

“The science is indisputable. Modern animal agriculture will continue to make us sick unless we radically change our eating habits,” Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix said in a statement.

Production of the documentary is currently ending at the end of 2020.

Raise awareness about these new threats

In April, as the death toll from Covid-19 rose, Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix wrote a column for Washington Post, Alert to the dominance of markets selling live animals in the United States, according to reports Limit.

For his part, Joaquin Phoenix has on many occasions expressed his commitment to defending the animal cause and protecting the environment. During his Oscar acceptance speech for his role in Joker, the actor said: “We are becoming increasingly alienated from nature and many of us are guilty of a self-centered view of the world. We are plundering nature for its resources (…) but if we use love and compassion as principles Guidelines, we can create, develop and implement systems of change that will benefit all beings and our planet.”

A few days before the Oscars, Joaquin Phoenix also took part in a campaign to prevent Extinction Rebellion. She did this to raise awareness about the impacts of the meat and dairy industry on climate change. We are destroying and burning tropical forests, and we are seeing the negative effects of this on a global scale,” he noted remarkably.

The actor, who insisted on wearing the same outfit at all of the season’s festivities to raise awareness of clothing waste, has also been a PETA spokesperson for many years. A vegetarian since childhood, regularly participates in the campaigns of the association.
