Overwatch 2 – Sojourn release date, beta access and more

What is the Overwatch 2 release date? Blizzard has revealed the sequel to its 2016 hero shooter, and while the release remains a mystery, everyone is looking forward to an answer. While the developers had plans to keep the Overwatch community updated as the game developed, the departure of game director Jeff Kaplan, among other developments at Blizzard, eventually put an end to that plan.

In March 2022, Blizzard announced its plans to separate the PvP features of the FPS game from the PvE systems. This change allows Overwatch 2’s PvP game mode to be taken into players’ hands immediately, starting with the Overwatch 2 beta in the last week of April. Here’s everything we know about the Overwatch 2 release date so far, including the recent split between PvP and PvE, every new hero, and more.

Overwatch 2 release date

The Overwatch 2 release date is likely to be 2023 at the earliest. Blizzard confirmed that Overwatch 2 won’t launch until 2023 during last year’s third-quarter earnings call, VGC reported. The hero shooter never received a firm release date when it was first revealed at BlizzCon 2019, however, fans have been eagerly awaiting updates at every BlizzCon since then.

BlizzCon 2020 was canceled due to the pandemic, but was reintroduced as a virtual event in 2021. This event gave the community a sneak peak into the game so far in a behind-the-scenes video, where I touched on changes to PvP, some from PvE systems, and some changes to champions so far. .

Overwatch 2

The first snippet from the PvP game that we got is the new Push mode. It is very similar to the traditional Escort mode and tasks one team with moving the payload from one point to another. Meanwhile, the other team has to stop the other team from advancing. The main difference here is that the payload has a bot to do the move for you, so you don’t need to play around having teammates in the payload. The mode will appear in Quickplay and Competitive, although there are some details we don’t know yet – such as whether the large bot has any health or can be affected by player abilities. This mode will be playable on Overwatch 1 along with a sequel.

Not all Overwatch 1 game modes will appear in the sequel. In a behind-the-scenes video, Jeff Kaplan stated that “there is probably no 2CP in Overwatch 2, and there is probably a cool new game mode to replace it”.

The big new addition are Overwatch 2’s Story and Hero missions, which amplify the PvE side of the game. As the name suggests, Story Missions focuses on expanding the game’s story and lore, while Hero Missions features the same player versus waves of coordinating bots seen in Overwatch 1’s seasonal events, with multiple different mode types, such as ‘Wall of Death’, scavenger hunt, Kill Mission . These missions focus more on character customization, such as Overwatch 2’s talents. However, they are limited to Overwatch 2 and will not be playable through the original game.

When we spoke to Jeff Kaplan back in 2020, he was excited about the PvE element of Overwatch 2, specifically how players can “cluster together” [and] Be grateful to their teammates,” and how since players will be fighting Null Sector bots instead of other humans, “we can make you win more than half the time.”

Overwatch 1’s story usually focuses on the collapse of Overwatch, often looking back at what happened to the freedom fighters and the Omnic Crisis, which was a rebellion by bots against their human creators. But this time around, the story seems to be looking at the second Omnic Crisis and the possibility of an Overwatch reunification.

Will Overwatch 2 have loot chests? In our interview with Jeff Kaplan, he explained that for Overwatch 2, “we’re exploring different options that keep us away from loot boxes.” He also praised battle passes as an “enjoyable engagement mechanism,” referring specifically to Diablo 3’s “seasonal journey” — an unpaid battle pass — as a “cool system.” Although we’re not sure what’s in store for us, it looks like Overwatch 2 won’t necessarily have the same loot box system as the original game.
